Do you have a website where your ideal client can find you and book you immediately?

That’s one of the key things you need your website to do. Because once people get to your website, they’re not scrolling mindlessly anymore. People go online actively looking for something: they’ve had to search for what they need. No-one just scrolls the internet.

So if you can communicate a clear message about what you do, and if you can give them a paid opportunity to work with you, you can often save yourself the time and effort of a discovery call as well. That’s why the “book a two-lesson trial” is one of our mantras. It’s a relatively low-cost, low-risk way for clients to start working with you that is an easy "yes". And if that first lesson is the recommended assessment, parents get very valuable feedback after the first session so they immediately experience the value of working with you.

So designing your offer is key before you design your website.

There are two big mistakes it’s easy to make with a website.

The first is to think it has to be perfect.

Websites are ALWAYS a work in progress. They are never perfect, and they are never finished. If you’ve ever worked on fixing up your house, it’s a bit like that - once something is finished, there’s always something else to do. And you can always tweak or upgrade any number of things. That’s why done is always better than perfect.

The second mistake is making your website way too complicated.

Clients want to know you understand their problem and you have a solution to it that they can easily get. You know how frustrating it is to hunt for that ingredient in the supermarket that you just can’t find? That’s the feeling you need to avoid on your website.

You don't have to be an IT geek!

That’s why we recommend a Google website. If you can manage word-processing, you’ll be able to create your own Google website and update it easily. In the connect programme, we have a whole module on websites where we’ll give you the complete structure so you just have to personalize it. And once your website is out there, and clients start finding you “from Google”, you’ve got a powerful marketing tool.

You can start your tutoring business without building a website, but it’s such a relatively easy, low-cost and valuable thing to do, we recommend you do it. And that's why in our connect programme we have a whole module talking you through how to build your website, plus the option to let someone else do it if you don't want to.
